Space is not likely the final frontier, but today, space represents the next frontier.
We Humans as a species are curious, competitive, arrogant, self-important, and violent. Open the door to a new frontier, and we will climb over each other to get our piece of it, and kill anyone who tries to take it from us. However, bottle us up, and we kill each other off until we have enough space. And if resources get scarce, the killing gets worse.
Expansion or Extinction - we must choose soon.
Time and again, human civilizations have expanded beyond the boundaries of the available resources - into the space of others, or into new, virgin frontiers. These frontiers open the crowding of our oppressive "civilization" and provide needed relief valves for those willing to strike out into new territory. These intrepid souls, open the trails onto which others hungrily follow to create new bastions of civilization, repeating the ever-expanding cycle of human existence.
In this expansion of the physical extent, we invariably expand our knowledge and understanding of the universe. There is only so much we can do by putting things under the microscope, or watching through the telescope. Already, the possibilities have grown beyond our ability to reach. New planets are discovered almost daily. Yet our civilization continues to wallow in our dimishing resources, and increasing wastes.
Expansion or Extinction - we must choose soon.
With each leap to a new frontier, our society learned new lessons. Agriculture, Mathematics, Science, Medicine - all benefited from the expansion of mind that occurred with each expanding lurch. We created laws, rules of war, abolished slavery, and arrogantly reached for the moon. And we got slapped back.
I am sure that the resources necessary to reach the new world were equally daunting in Christopher Columbus' day. And there were many before him, now lost to the waves of history, who paid the price. The americas remained elusive until we learned how to manage our resources well enough to get there. Today is no different. For us to reach the moon, and settle there successfully, we must manage our resources.
We are ready, we are overdue; the tech (both high and low) are available for us to use effectively: Expansion or Extinction - we must choose soon ... or die.
